+The MB&F Melchior, made in collaboration with L'Epée, is arguably one of the most iconic representations of the company’s free-spirited mantra. A product of MB&F’s artistic concept laboratory, their philosophy is simple - the reinterpretation of traditional, high-quality craftsmanship into three-dimensional kinetic sculptures.
Melchior represents one of MB&F’s 10th Anniversary Pieces (limited to 99), unveiled in 2015 under the theme ”A creative adult is a child who survived”.
L'Epée x MB&F
L'Epée themselves, have been at the forefront of watch and clock making for over 175 years. As one of the last Swiss manufacturers dedicated to the production of high-end clocks, designed and manufactured in-house, ultra-long power reserves have become a signature of the brand. Melchior is no exception, with five mainspring barrels offering a power reserve of 40 days, indicated by a display on the abdomen of the kinetic robot.
This example represents the “Dark and Light” edition, with black PVD-treated steel and brass ‘armour’ and high-polishing. developed the 'Roboclock' concept with designer Xin Wang, reimagining a high-end clock calibre from L’Epée, as the mechanical head and torso for the robot. The name Melchior comes a traditional forename in the Büsser family.
In total, 480 components make up the machine, with flourishes true to ’s creative spirit throughout. For example, the left-side Gatling gun ‘arm’ doubles as both the winding and time-setting key.
The polished glass dome serves as the ‘skull’, with the regulator beating beneath, symbolising Melchior’s brain at work. The time is displayed through jumping hours and sweeping minutes on Melchior’s torso, using MB&F’s signature numerals. The indicators, a curved piece of chest armour. Melchior’s eyes mark off intervals of 20 seconds, giving the robot a hint of human-like personality.
This Melchior example comes with its original box and product literature, and is under warranty from the brand.
